Golden Pen, Golden Schmen…

In yesterday’s JG the editors continued their never-ending assault against the Code Blue Schools group by giving January’s Golden Pen award to Leonard Goldstein. The golden pen goes to the “most effective letter” but Goldstein’s lackluster letter hardly qualifies as “effective”. If John B. Kalb can let Harrison Square go then the JG editorial board and the yellow ribbon supporters can do the same. You lost - get over it.
Lockwood Marine and Evert Mol, the leading opponents of the defeated Fort Wayne Community Schools renovation and rehabilitation program, proclaimed as their goal the unseating of board members Steve Corona and Carol Coen.
Well, that’s the democratic way. But today conditions and problems are vastly different from the “good old days.”
What exactly are the “good old days”? Why is it that proponents of the failed FWCS facilities project like Goldstein just can’t stop with the strawman arguments? Every time I read one of these letters I end up shaking my head saying “they just don’t get it”. But Goldstein doesn’t stop there:
The problem is that everyone who has ever been to school considers himself or herself an expert on schools and how they should be run. Marine and Mol or their surrogates will find it necessary to depend on the professional staff schooled, trained and experienced for guidance and data.
The real problem as I see it is that people like Goldstein think they know exactly what everyone else needs and wants. What exactly were his qualifications to be on the school board or any other board for that matter? The school board isn’t about controlling the day-to-day operations of the school - Marine and Mol know this - but the board should be more than a rubberstamp for whatever the administration wants.
I would suggest Goldstein make sure that Golden Pen is full of ink because Carona and Coen are in for a battle this election cycle and the JG might not have enough ink to save them…

And yet NO ONE has filed to run against Coen or Corona at this point. I believe the deadline is Friday.
That deadline does not apply since the school board is a non-partisan position that is not part of the primary process. The deadline for FWCS is Aug 22 - you can see all the deadlines on the Election Board’s 2008 Election Calendar
You’ve got to hand it to the old liberal war horse Goldstein — he still finds a way to bash the Bush defense spending, even in a letter about schools. (See last line of the original letter, not reproduced here).
I saw that. He criticizes those that think they’re “educational” experts but then comments about defense spending. I wonder if he fancies himself an expert in defense budgeting?
