Are You Reading The Best Blog In Town?

I just have to let people know that I think Phil Marx’s My HUD House is the best blog running. It’s not political, at least not in the traditional sense like this and other blogs are. Marx lives in drug neighborhood on a drug corner right here in Fort Wayne and has for the past dozen years or so. Over that time Marx has kept a detailed journal of the daily happenings, his interactions with drug dealers, police and the community in general.
He is now taking stories from his journal and posting them on his blog giving readers a first-hand account of what it’s like to live in his neighborhood. It’s truly a unique site that gives readers some insight into a culture and environment that most people can’t begin to comprehend. His blog is relatively new so if you start now you’ll be able to catch up before he gets too far into the story. And Marx typically only posts on the weekends so that will give readers additional time to come up to speed.
I will admit that when I see a new post at My HUD House I always block out a certain amount of time that I can dedicate to reading his site without distractions. It’s like a television series you become addicted to and have to watch on a weekly basis - it’s that good. Readers might remember Mike Sylvester’s post back in 2006 describing his friend’s house that was firebombed - that was Marx’s home.
Just for fun, here’s a couple of excerpts:
So I walked past the drug dealer, picked up the trash can (that still had his drugs inside it) and started walking towards my front yard. He began stammering “Hey, what are you doing?” his tone was more of a shocked one than an aggressive one. He followed me as I walked towards the house, so I put the trash can down in my front yard. I said “Look, you’re out here selling drugs, and your using my property as cover for it. That is not going to happen.”
I had no idea how much stuff he had stashed in the trash can, or the value of it. Realizing that losing money would probably piss him off much worse than just being told to leave, I offered him a way out. I said “I’m going inside to get a trash bag. When I come back, everything in this can is going in that bag. Take your stuff and get off my property.” I told him I‘d call the police if he came back. To my surprise, when I came back out a minute later, the man was gone, and the trash can was still setting upright.
This spring (my third here) did not begin well. One night, I heard shouting outside. I looked out the window to see Gordon standing on the sidewalk and shouting “This is my block. I built it, and nobody’s gonna take it from me. All you mother fuckers need to stay inside tonight.” He was pacing back and forth and appeared to be very high. I think his message was intended mainly for the other dealers who were encroaching on “his” territory, but he also said “I don’t wanna see no white people, I don’t wanna see no cops. This is my corner.”

I sure hope I don’t develop writer’s block, now that you’ve put a spotlight on me.
And the reason I only post on the weekends is because the rest of the week is reserved for my true passion in life - reading and commenting on other’s blogs!
