City Hires New Director of Public Information

The mayor announced that Rebecca L. Karcher, Account Supervisor/Public Relations Manager for Asher Agency, has been appointed as Director of Public Information effective April 1st. Karcher will replace Mike Joyner who was working in a dual role as Director of Public Information for the FWPD and the city of Fort Wayne.

It’s a good sign that the mayor found someone to fill this position as it simply wasn’t possible for Joyner to be effective in both jobs simultaneously. Congratulations to Karcher and good luck in the new position - even if she is a KU grad…

Rebecca and I have been friends since she worked for Mayor Helmke. She is a wonderful addition to the City and I look forward to working with her. Rebecca is very talented and she understands the importance of good communication with the media and the public.

And to top it off, her success at overcoming the obvious handicap of being a KU grad is truly inspirational.

I look forward to being part of local government and public service. I am really psyched about being part of the positive momentum of our community!

I want to thank Karen for believing in me, even when it’s obvious she is so jealous of my clearly superior educational resume. Rock Chalk,Jayhawk, my friends, Rock Chalk!

Another good hire by Mr. Henry. Actually, I do not know Ms. Karcher. Here is what I go by: I know Councilwoman Goldner and Fort Wayne Politics. Karen likes this move; Rebecca reads FWP. So far, so good. The only baffling piece is the Kansas U. Am I not correct in thinking that Indiana is known nationally and internationally “Hoosiers” as basketball country? I am puzzled how someone from Kansas ended up here. Do they even have a team? I better go back and look at my brackets for the NCAA tourney and see if I can find KU somehwere in there. I do see IU, Purdue, Butler and Notre Dame. Kansas may be there somewhere if I look hard enough.

    Congrats to the New PIO.

Now Michael Joyner can actually go back 100% to the Police Department and I must say he did an outstanding job for the past nearly half-year wearing two hats and keeping our heads above water here in the three rivers city–and the nation’s Basketball Nation.
