Council Approves Maplecrest Extension Work

Posted by Jeff Pruitt - 4/22/08 @ 10:36 pm - Filed Under City Council, Featured

Two weeks ago councilman Tom Smith successfully stalled the vote on whether or not to proceed with $124k worth of work to move some utilities around for the Maplecrest Extension project. Tonight that ordinance came back before the council and was approved with only Smith and John Shoaff voting against it.

It’s my understanding that only 20% of this amount will come directly from the city as the other 80% will come from the state. Nevertheless, I agreed with councilman Smith when he made the argument that council should wait and see what happens with this project at the county level before proceeding. The city admits that the work would not need to be completed for approximately 3 years so what’s the rush?

And just for those of you keeping score at home, the city’s portion of the Maplecrest Extension project, if approved as planned today, would be $2 million.

That is a sad knee jerk spending of taxpayer money. A pause and some thought would have been a good thing, unfortunately, thought doesn’t happen a lot around here. Engineers do not concern themselves with taxpayer cost…and they should.

One significant detail that is generally being ignored here is that the money isn’t going to be spent unless/until the project is determined to move forward. Basically City Council gave approval to the engineers to negotiate for the utility easement.

I, for one, am concerned about the project, but there was no reason for delaying the discussion with I&M at this point.

    Karen,

That is a significant detail and one I missed although I do try to pay attention to these things. I don’t think that was very clear - at least it wasn’t to me.

Of course the city council could also not authorize ANY funding for the Maplecrest extension project despite what the county decides to do…

Got it Karen and thanx for correcting me. I am strongly opposed to the Maplecrest Extension project and (even though I don’t want to admit it) Mr. Knuth offers up some pretty clear reasoning as to why to be opposed to it. Its simple. Its about the Allen County Taxpayers and true blue economic development in Allen County. I can not argue with that line of thinking Mr. Knuth. If someone wants to jump on me for actually complimenting a Democratic candidate, let them, because I am not interested in the drivel that is driving this County into the ground (Mr. Warner). Bad ideas are bad ideas and its not a Democrat Republican thing…its a people thing.
