Governor Daniels Releases Bogus Ad

There’s many half-truths in this ad but there’s one blatant lie as well - see if you can catch it.

Didn’t raise taxes? Surely people won’t believe that. Hell his first proposal after taking office was to raise the income tax on those making over 100k by 1%. That proposal didn’t pass but he’s supported other tax increases as well. Thomas from Blue Indiana explains:

My favorite part of the ad — and this isn’t a new claim — is that the guy has saved the world WITHOUT RAISING TAXES!

Unless, of course, you count his 2005 budget that helped property taxes skyrocket.

…or his increase of the cigarette tax.

…or his advocacy of local income tax increases, (and, of course, the creation of a property tax plan that would require such increases in cities across the state.)

…or his raising of the sales tax by 17%

Yeah, except for those, he has totally not raised taxes.

Your alleged “bogus” ad, may be the best political ad I have seen in some time.

    From Taking Down Words today:

March 2006: From Inside Indiana Business

Indiana’s rapid growth in the life sciences-related industries reached new heights today as Governor Mitch Daniels joined Pfizer Inc executives to announce the company’s intent to hire more than 450 new employees to manufacture the complete Exubera line at its Terre Haute facility. Exubera is the first inhalable form of insulin for controlling Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in adults. Pfizer received FDA approval for the drug in late January.

    Today: From the Indystar

Drug maker Pfizer Inc. will close its sterile manufacturing plant in Terre Haute by the middle of next year.

The company says the closure will eliminate the remaining 140 jobs at the plant.

The announcement is not surprising as the New York-based company said in January that it would lay off 660 workers at the Vigo County plant. It warned then that the remaining jobs could be cut later.

I can’t help but notice that the Governor had everything to do with the new jobs announcement at Pfizer, but is nowhere to be found when those exact same jobs disappear. Where’s the press event, Mitch? 660 jobs that you were so proud to have created have disappeared, where did you go?

    GOOD STUFF!

The increase on the cigarette tax is, of course, unconscionable. It puts the State of Indiana in the tobacco business.

I’ll never forget when a former attorney general of Indiana, came to speak to my grad school class. He was talking about the need for the cigarette tax because of the increased health costs caused by smokers. One enterprising young man (I wish I could say it was me) asked whether the state, in assessing the tax, took into account the health savings from premature deaths (which, from the accounts I have read, dwarf the costs). His response was, “we don’t count any of those.”

A little bit off topic but an interesting look into government think. Instead of raising cigarette taxes, Mitch should have just formed a partnership. Benson & Hoosiers?
