Culture of corruption continued by Democrats

Everyone remembers how the Democrats promised to clean up the “culture of corruption” in Washington DC. Nancy Pelosi famously promised that she would “Drain the Swamp” when she took over as the Speaker of the House.
I have written several posts expressing my anger at the Democrats for failing to follow through on their promises. Here are some of the promises Democrats need to answer for:
1. We have more troops in Iraq today then when the Democrats swept to power in November of 2006. When the Democrats were running in 2006 they repeatedly promised to draw down troop levels in Iraq. As the readers of this blog know I opposed going into Iraq in 2003 and I think we need to start pulling our troops out of Iraq today. I also do not want us to continue wasting American taxpayer dollars rebuilding Iraq. We are the largest debtor nation in the world and have no business going further in debt to rebuild Iraq.
2. The Democrats just caved in and not only extended the unconstitutional wiretapping powers granted by the Patriot Act; they expanded those powers while granting immunity to the telecommunications companies at the same time. (Note the Republicans have always been wrong on this issue; however, almost half of the Democrats joined with the Republicans to expand the wiretapping program.)
3. The Democrats promised a new energy policy. Since they have taken power oil and gas have increased in price and we still do not have a reasonable comprehensive energy policy (The only thing the Democrats have done right on the energy front is that they increased the CAFE standards which was a good idea).
The Democrats still oppose expanding domestic drilling and they have failed to join President Bush in his desire to expand nuclear power.
4. Currently the Democrats are trying to push through a housing bill that will bail out lenders like Countrywide who got greedy and made questionable loans to homeowners. This bill will likely bail out some homeowners and will put the taxpayers on the hook for these bad loans. It is shameful that the Democrats want to make the US taxpayer subsidize large lending companies and people who bought more house then they should have bought.
My real anger right now is directed at Democratic Senator Kent Conrad and Democratic Senator Chris Dodd. You really should take the time to read the below article at National Review Online:
http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=MmEwYzQ1NmY2NDc1ZGIzNTIzZDVkMTRhMzg4ZTA5ZGY=#more
The two Democratic Senators received loans at below market rates from Countrywide since they are V.I.P’s. This is shameful and should be investigated.
The Senate recently voted not to investigate Dodd or Conrad. All of the Democrats voted to not investigate Dodd and Conrad… Not a single Democrat who voted saw a problem with these below market loans.
The Democrats are no different than the Republicans they replaced. They prove it on issue after issue.
We need to elect a lot of new people to Congress…

Yes we do need to elect a fresh slate of representatives across all lines.
Absolutely correct, the two party governments have made a lot of promises.
No wonder we are either with them or against them in their decisions’ to lead the USA to a stable future. It’s hard to keep tabs on the goals set forth in this 2-party system…
On promises set forth by our global USA elected officials:
1. The dynamics in the Middle East…Afghan, Iraq, Iran, Israel, and Eastern Europe is a global interest. What’s the most powerful nation to have a current role in police keeping? We are a huge debtor nation. Should we pull out of Germany, Japan, and South Korea? What will replace International security?
2. National Security…do you really think they are wire-tapping your phone and mine. It’s for International calls… target specific.
3. An Energy Policy was never in the plans was it? Now it’s become a dire situation internationally.
“One thing we should do is abolish gasoline taxes. They’re too regressive. The Chinese, Indians and much of South America subsidize gasoline for their people. Without it, inflation would go through the roof, and wage earners would riot in the streets.”

4. 300 to 400 people were arrested across the Nation for taking part in the collapse…fraud of our housing mortgage industry. Countrywide once a good reputable mortgage company like National City Bank has been held hostage by bad mortgage decisions’. Honestly, should we let the mortgage companies across the nation fail and let the banking industry fail, and other markets fall..?
5. I do not want to subsidize anyone. I’m tired of it. What I would like is some uniformity.
Let’s elect all new people to represent us.. Term Limits across the board for both party’s.
Mike,
1. The Democrats passed legislation that would’ve withdrawn all troops from Iraq by April of this year. That legislation was vetoed by the President. The Republicans have also filibustered several other pieces of legislation. There is absolutely no doubt that the only reason we have the number of troops we have in Iraq is due to the President and the Republican party.
2. I agree except that the wiretapping powers weren’t granted by the PATRIOT act. They were not granted by any act. They were illegal.
3. CAFE standards will make a huge difference in consumption - that isn’t some minor issue. 70% of our oil consumption comes from autos. I’m with you on nuclear energy and I think people will come around soon enough.
4. The housing bill is horrible and should be defeated. It’s the typical “buy off the rich to help the poor” legislation.
The Dodd and Conrad dust-up I’m not so sure about yet. I have no problem with an investigation but as of now there’s no evidence of impropriety. Both men say they had no knowledge they received favorable rates. On the surface that seems logical. There’s a lot of variability and competition among lenders - when I bought a house if I would’ve been given a slightly favorable rate I’m not sure I would’ve noticed either.
Until there’s more evidence I’m going to withhold judgement.
Jeff,
1. Please post some links showing me that the Bill President Bush vetoed would have had all of the US troops home by April of 2008. I have never seen such a bill.
2. The Patriot Act gave broad new powers including wiretapping.
3. I agree the Democrats did the right thing on CAFE standards. They are important; however, it is not that important especially when you realize that we may well not make automakers comply with the CAFE standards.
4. We agree 100% of this one.
Jeff there won’t be more evidence without an investigation.

Empty promises with little resolve…
The solutions are..
Mike,
Here it is.
Jeff,
I did miss it.
I still feel the Democrats have not done enough to get us out of Iraq; however, you are correct they did pass one Bill that would have got it done and they should be commended for that.
Mike
It’s bigger than all of us…It’s all lies we will
not pull out. Look at number 1. in my previous post.
I wish it was this simple. Think hard and long.
The White House quickly denounced the outcome.
“The Senate has now joined the House in passing defeatist legislation that insists on a date for surrender, micromanages our commanders and generals in combat zones from 6,000 miles away, and adds billions of dollars in unrelated spending,” White House spokeswoman Dan Perino said”
Offshore drilling would produce a negligible amount of oil; it would hardly offset even inflation by the time it got on the market. I haven’t heard any decent argument for drilling offshore. If you have one, I’ll listen to it.
It’s like trying to help a heroin addict by giving him a free dime bag every week.
Perhaps we should concentrate on reducing our dependence, don’t you think?
As far as energy goes I think we should do several things:
1. Expand our nuclear generating capacity.
2. Reduce oil consumption.
3. Increase domestic drilling and production.
4. Build new refineries in this country.
5. Expand alternative fuel sources.
Our problem is large and will not be fixed by just one thing. We need to establish a comprehensive policy!

Destruction of habitat and the tourism industry seems to be a high price to pay for a savings of eight cents a gallon.
I should have linked to that excerpt: American Prospect.
Hope my html is up to code (guffaw!).
American,
I feel that we must both lower consumption and increase production.
The article you quoted does not consider oil speculation. I think that a lot of the increase in oil prices is due to speculation.
It seems to me that prices due to speculation will decrease if we announce we are going to increase production!
Also why do you assume that drilling offshore will destroy habitat and the tourism industry?
Mike Sylvester
Off shore drilling will not hurt tourism or habitats one bit. Two thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered by the oceans. That gives marine life and tourists plenty of places to go.
But if it does damage the tourism industry, that will help reduce consumption.
