Montagano Looking Strong

Third District Democratic congressional candidate Mike Montagano is only one of 22 candidates nationwide to have raised more money than the incumbent. He’s also only one of 9 candidates to have more cash on hand than the incumbent. From the Montagano press release:

“Any time you outraise an incumbent, especially someone like Souder who funds his campaign with contributions from oil companies and then votes to give them tax breaks despite rising gas costs, it gives your campaign a huge amount of momentum,” Montagano explained.

I had a couple of different people suggest to me that Montagano wasn’t doing enough campaigning. I tried to explain to him that the guy has been everywhere and is out raising money which is exactly what he needs to do at this point. He simply cannot win unless he’s competitive in the fundraising arena.

Meanwhile, the challenge is starting to mount for Mark Souder:

  1. Montagano crushed Souder in primary votes
  2. Montagano has outraised Souder
  3. DCCC has added Montagano to their Red to Blue Emerging Races List
  4. Indiana is in play for the Presidential race
  5. Evan Bayh could be Obama’s VP choice

I never would’ve guessed it months ago but Montagano may be the Democrats’ best chance to pick up a Congressional seat in Indiana. And don’t think that will go unnoticed by the national party…

    Jeff,

I think I am most likely one of the people you talked to about his campaign…

I am impressed by his fundraising; however, I am “un-impressed” by his activities and his message.

His press release has the following quote:

“Any time you outraise an incumbent, especially someone like Souder who funds his campaign with contributions from oil companies and then votes to give them tax breaks despite rising gas costs, it gives your campaign a huge amount of momentum,”

You have got to be kidding me? This is an actual quote from his press release…

Everyone knows that I have a strong dislike for Mark Souder; however, even I know Mark Souder’s campaign is not funded by the oil companies and I also know that BOTH political parties have given the large oil companies massive tax breaks over the last 100 years…

It’s too bad someone like Tom Hayhurst isn’t running this year - he’s a Democrat that I would vote for because he’s just a plain old honest man.

FYI Montagano Campaign: I’m still waiting on the “Community Voice Project” to produce some results on your websites.

    Mike,

I don’t particularly care what happened 100 years ago. I know one party wants to end big oil subsidies and one doesn’t…

    Jeff,

I think we will have a Democratic President, House, and Senate.

I also would bet you almost anything that the Democrats will not end all oil subsidies. It is just election year talk.

    Mike,

Souder took $10,000 from the Koch Industries PAC. That company is primarily into building refineries and such.

    Kevin,

I do not doubt it a bit.

That is a far cry from being in the pocket of “big oil.”

I could list all of the Democrats with contributions from big oil and that list would be HUGE.

Do not get me wrong; I will not vote for Mark Souder…

The last time we had a Democrat President, House and Senate it brought about the biggest Republican congressional resurgence in history. Be careful what you wish for.

I hope Kevin can do better than one $10,000 donation from some company that builds refineries.

I’m torn on this election given my “run off the stage crying test” which I’ve enunciated before (I will vote for Souder’s opponent unless they run off the stage crying during a debate). I should vote for Montagano, at least at this point. I have some reservations about anyone whose sole goal in life is to be a politician.
