How Much Does Experience Matter?

In their story about Evert Mol filing for the FWCS board, the News-Sentinel (JG story here) ran a quote from incumbent board member Steve Corona:
I feel confident about winning,” said Corona, a veteran of 27 years on the board who defeated Mol in the 2004 election. “I think there’s a great deal of experience, and I think experience does matter.”
When does experience become overstaying your welcome? I suppose voters will get a chance to answer that one. Having said that, I will stipulate that experience does matter - just not always for the better. This school district must right the ship soon or else we’ll continue to see more and more taxpayers choose to locate in other suburban districts.
When that happens the tax burden only becomes heavier on those that choose to stay or simply cannot afford to leave. I think all candidates would agree that voters need to take school board elections seriously. They have typically had poor turnout yet 50% of your property tax bill goes to fund schools. The best way to turn around a school district is to get parents and the rest of the community intimately involved. The first step towards that goal is to vote…

The caption in the JG should have read “remodeling foe” instead of “fix up” foe. Maybe the editorial satff supplied the caption.
Experience is more germain to an executive position, for instance, President, Governor or Mayor, but in a position where it tends to be more legislative, experience is relative to the persons political philosphy, education and “real world experince.” If someone has “political experience” on a School Board or on the County Council and consistantly votes for tax increases or wasteful spending, then that experience means nothing to me. I will take my chances with the candidate who has a political philosophy more in line with what I believe.
Mr. Corona has to tell us how his 28 years of experience on the board has translated into any improvement in test scores. He can’t because it hasn’t. He’s presided over a long term decline in academic achievment, failing to challenge the administration to make changes.
During the remostrance period, an important question was raised by many people. Why were FWCS buildings allowed to fall into such disrepair in the first place? Obviously, whether they needed $500 Mil. or just $300 Mil. somebody was not exercising proper oversight in this regard.
So under Corona’s “leadership”, it appears that he has presided over both failing to educate the children as well as neglecting the buildings. That’s a great record to run on!
By the way, how do I get my Mol and Olinger campaign signs?
Phil,
Go to the Code Blue website and leave your name, address and phone # and we’ll see that you get signs plus invites to our meetings and opportunities to campaign. We can use people like you in several ways!!
Thanks, Lockwood. I’m going to try to attend this Monday’s Conservative breakfast club meeting as well. I think that you shoul make a list of any bloggers that are friendy to your cause and request that they help publicize everything that you are doing. I think public sentiment is obviously in your favor, you just have to make sure they remain informed.
