Hardball Capital The Big Winner In Stadium Naming Rights

Posted by Jeff Pruitt - 9/14/08 @ 11:27 am - Filed Under Featured, Local Politics

A quick Sunday morning thought. Why should Hardball Capital get half of the naming rights? The city is paying for $25 million of the $30 million stadium and yet we’re handing over half ($1.5 million) of the naming rights.

To add insult to injury, HC benefits from the city’s portion of the naming rights because it’s all being put into a stadium maintenance fund. To make matters worse, the city still has to come up with another $80k/year to completely fund the annual maintenance schedule. Why the hell shouldn’t HC kick in $80k from their portion of the naming rights?

The Colts get all the revenue from the new stadium naming rights and they get paid for leaving the RCA Dome early.

At least the city gets half.

    Hi Jeff,

I cannot remember my source on this, be it Greg Leatherman or former Deputy Mayor Mark Becker, but theoretically, giving the team part of the naming rights revenues helps to ensure that they will do as much as possible to make the ballpark successful. In this case doubly so as they are also managing the facility.

If it flops and no one attends games, then no one will pay much to name it. So, this gives them a vested interest to be all they can be. Besides, without a team, what do you have? A lot of seats with some grass in the middle.

But in this case, with the City paying such a high percentage of the costs of not only the ballpark, but the project as a whole, it feels like the pay off should go back to the City. The other revenues, like parking garage revenues and possible ticket sales go into the CMF as well. But any shortfalls are made up by taxpayers.

I continue to scratch my head on this one. Some economics professor should really write up a case study on this cluster-fxxx.

The older I get, the more it appears that politicians are just not the brightest bears in the woods.

It also appears that developers have all of the power. Do they have pictures on the politicians I wonder?!

Certainly shifts a lot of my perspectives….

Kristina, I dont know you but apparently you are indeed one of the brighter bears in the woods. Please shed some light on your comment. After your extensive analysis, you have surmised that the whole project is a “cluster -_____” Please tell us more and do not spare us the details. Elaborate on your issues. Is your problem with the amount for the naming rights which is one of the one of the higher amounts obtained by comparable minor league ballpark? Is your problem with the entity that stepped forward to purchase the naming rights when all the naysayers said nobody would step forward? Even thought you are apparently very very bright, is it somehow a surprise to you that a professional sports team would get a cut of the naming rights?

Dont leave us hanging? Or, are you just tossing hand grenades to make friends with Mr. Kalb.

Kristina I’ll share a thought with Mr. Green.

    Mr. Green Jeans,

    Parkview is a non-profit hospital.
Do the math, and then think of good-will.
Is this the best sponsor for a baseball stadium?

Now it’s ok to take away from the poor and give to the rich? …hmmmm

Mr. Green Jeans….you are WAY over the top obsessed with Mr. Kalb. I don’t even know the man - have read his replies here - that’s the extent.

If we happen to agree on some of the same things - great…but I think you’ll find that I agree a great deal with Jeff and Evert and many others.

So c’mon, stop obsessing and wondering if I am hot for Mr. Kalb. It’s getting old.

And btw - if you think this stadium “deal” is a textbook, classic example of something that is outstanding, wonderful, and should be replicated from city to city - AWESOME! Remind me never to put you in charge of the financials for anything.

Curiously, is Mr. Green Jeans a person that longs for Captain Kangraoo. We beleive in lessons in morality with the help of his friends: Mr. Green Jeans, Mr. Moose, and Mr. Rabbit, among others.

Mr. Jeans - I spoke with one of my friends who is a big supporter of the downtown, unnecessary new ball field at church yesterday and he informed me that his problem with the Parkview $3 million give-away is with the fact that Parkview is leaving the city of Fort Wayne with their non-profit company. His concern was “what a great PR thing?” - giving big bucks to a facility that is suppose to revitalize our town when they are leaving it! Talk about speaking out of both sides of your mouth. “Do as I say not as I do!”

Ms. Frazier, nice job responding again without saying ANYTHING at all. If you are going to toss around the term cluster-_____, then you should be able to back it up. If you cant back it up, well then, maybe YOU are not one of the “brightest bears in the woods” (to steal your term) as you lead us to believe.

  10. Mr. Green Jeans on September 15th, 2008 8:45 am

Bobett, never heard of Captain Kangaroo. My parents, however, were huge fans. If not for the grace of god, I would have ended up Mr. Moose, Mr. Rabbit, or god forbid, Dancing Bear. I am glad they chose Mr. Green Jeans. By the way, “Mr. Green Jeans” is my first name, so technically, my formal name would be “Mr. Mr. Green Jeans”

    Thanks for your concern Bobett.

Forgot about him?!, thats my brother’s name.

    Mr Kalb:

“the fact that Parkview is leaving the city of Fort Wayne with their non-profit company.”

That’s a new one on me. I knew they moved corporate to Dupont Road and are building a new hospital there.

Is it possible you ment ‘leaving Randallia Drive’?

  14. Kristina Frazier-Henry on September 15th, 2008 10:42 am

    Mr. Green Jeans,

I don’t think that I need to say what has been said ad nauseum about this project. If you need a primer, perhaps you can ask someone to go through the posts here on FWP and link for you, all of the reasons why this stadium and Harrison Square is just bad economics. And it wasn’t all said by me either. And probably not John Kalb (but you would know that better than me since you seem to be in stalker mode with him).

My cluster-fu** comment was in regards to the naming announcement. It’s like the icing on the cake. While lots of stuff about this project can be blamed on the prior administration, the Henry group has now firmly jumped in and followed the yellow brick road set up by his predecessor.

Goody for him and for Fort Wayne.

Now, when “Hardball” screws over the city of Fort Wayne and its citizens, make sure you step up to open up your pocketbook. There will be yet another hair-ball scheme focused on “reinventing” downtown.

  15. George on September 15th, 2008 11:13 am

Mr Colgate, For your information the Dupont location is out of the city.

  16. Mr. Green Jeans on September 15th, 2008 11:21 am

Thank you for your honesty Ms. Frazier in admitting that you really had no idea what you were talking about and was just trying to flame discussion with your “cluster” comment.

  17. Penny Wise on September 15th, 2008 11:42 am

Mr. Green Jeans is in fact Jodi Dean, one of the former Kelty-ites.

  18. john b. kalb on September 15th, 2008 12:39 pm

John Colgate: “Parkview is building a new hospital at the Dupont Road location” ?? It’s bin there for over a year - what part of the world do you live in that you are not aweare of this - plus not knowing it is outside the city limits of Fort Wayne? And for your info, Dupont Hospital in IN the city limits.

  19. J. Q. Taxpayer on September 15th, 2008 1:33 pm

dahhhhh people…. Dupont is owned by Luthern and located southwest of Dupont and I-69. Parkview North is owned by Parkview and located northeast of Dupont and I-69…. Two hospitals, two locations. One in the city and one not….

  20. John Colgate on September 15th, 2008 2:47 pm

    Thanks John B.
I guess since Parkview “Main” is in the city limits and still a hospital and is still open I thought maybe you knew somthing I didn’t about “parkview moving out of town”! Like “in a Galaxy far, far away! Shame on me!
And… isn’t part of Parkview North is still under construction?
Should have known someone would pick fly poop out of pepper! I’ll update my city maps!

  21. Mr. Green Jeans on September 15th, 2008 3:42 pm

JQ, say it isnt so, Kalb blatantly wrong on the facts? Oh well, its never stopped him before.

  22. m. badgett on September 15th, 2008 6:58 pm

Parkview is not completely moving from its current location. We will still have a significant presence remaining in its current location. The services that are being moved will occur over the next several years but for now the plan is to have a number of services remain where they are after the move. Regardless of your views on the naming rights; basing it on the idea Parkview is leaving town is faulty. We will have a 100 bed hospital with a full service emergency room plus other services on the Parkview campus. I can’t remember for sure but I believe the behavior health center is staying. Karen Goldner was very involved in community meetings with Parkview so she can better speak to what is staying.

Mike (is it Packnett)or as typed, badgett: It was announced that the new Heart Hospital and the ER at State & Randalia would remain and all other buildings would be leveled. Has there been a change in plans? And isn’t the headquarters for Parkview Health Services now at Parkview North? And, John Colgate, is there ever any hospital in our area that is not building something all the time?

  24. Mr. Green Jeans on September 16th, 2008 10:06 am

    Penny,

apparently some “Keltyite” (as you call them) used the Mr. Green Jeans moniker. The real Mr. Green Jeans is indeed a “Mr.” and not a “Ms.”

  25. J. Q. Taxpayer on September 16th, 2008 12:28 pm

The “Heart Center” will remain is a joke and Parkview knows full damn well it is.

Currently no heart treatment is done at the north campus because the heart doctors do not want to have one more hospital to cover. Currently if you show up at Parkview North with a heart attack they do the following. They contact the main campus and talk to the heart doctor there. He works with the ER Doctor and stabilizes the patient. They stabilize and package the patient up for transfer to main campus. The reason I know that is I have been there, done that, and Parkview never gave me the T-shirt!

Once arriving at the main campus I was whisked into the OR and received three stents and was shipped to the CCU unit. After two days there I was then transferred to the surgery unit in the main hospital. I never saw the inside of the “heart center.”

Also setting up two locations for invasive types of heart operations is not profitable thing.

The current “Heart Center” does not house any patients that just have under gone invasive surgery with regards to the heart. They are either in the CCU unit or on the main surgery recovery floors of the hospital.

Parkview is not going to staff two locations with heart doctors available 24 hours a day to treat heart attacks. Let alone the equipment required to do such! This includes having OR rooms, surgical nursing staff, and a CCU unit to support post surgery treatment. They are not going to staff security, a food prep area, and all the support areas one needs for a working hospital unit.

What they will have is maybe is a few rooms for observation and treatment of heart patients. This would include people admitted in that need to have pacemakers adjusted, changing med levels, and an observation of a possible heart problem. The kicker is doctors do not like having patients all over the place. But that does not even make sense.

With regard to ER…. It will be an ER but not on the scale people think it will be. It will be much closer to a Redi-Med then the ER that sets there now. It is much better then nothing, but it to the scale many think will not be there.
