I think it is kind of foolish to even poll about casinos since it isn’t a matter of public opinion but of state law. Indianapolis has been trying very hard to change the law so it can have casinos, to complete its effort to be a cold weather tourist mecca. The existing casinos know that each new one cannibalizes revenue. Adding Indy first, then Ft. Wayne, etc. isn’t going to happen.
But, I suspect the poll results were negatively influenced by the “as part of the North River development” qualifier. If casinos could open here I’m all for it if somebody wants to open one. I suspect they would do so by the interstate, outside the jurisdiction of the most aggressive DUI enforcement in the country and Fort Wayne’s smoking prohibitions.
I have no interest in another public-private partnership where Greg Leatherman and his crowd decide the “best” place for a private business to open and then use tax money for subsidies and long term profit guarantees to convince the private partner to do it his way instead of their way. Hell, with enough subsidies and profit guarantees somebody will open a deep sea fishing charter service as part of the North River Development. Wouldn’t that be neat?
It would probably would help if they include in the poll that it would probably be a likely substantial public project. Many people don’t have the time or brain space attentiveness left available to realize that.
Looks like Mark has some really good points…
Stats are mis-leading.
This poll reminds me of our presidential polls.
Polls are full of holes.
looks pretty inconclusive and undecided to me.
Somebody has to take a stand!
lets start small- how about slot machines/poker/cherrymaster machines legal for all golf courses clubhouses? that would save us on the cost of summer golf, and help the golf operators to spread out their business.
think of all the local country clubs that would benefit from this extra revenue.
ditto for bars, veterans clubs, bars.
gotta diversify baby, diversify!
