County Council “Surprise”

Posted by Jeff Pruitt - 12/30/08 @ 7:22 pm - Filed Under Featured, Local Politics

I’m sure I’m not the only one bothered by this but since nobody else is willing to say it I suppose I will. I am sick and tired of seeing county council President Paul Moss talking about the reduction of the commissioners’ pay as some sort of surprise move that happened during the December 18 meeting. Here’s an example (but not the only case):

An accumulation of events over time sparked the idea, but the salary debate opened the door for discussion, said Moss, who was surprised how quickly the idea evolved at the council table.

Surprised? Really? The day before the meeting, word had already leaked out that “something big” was going to happen and the media had been alerted as well. So spare me the “surprise” - just be honest and admit that this was not some sort of organic snap decision made at the council table. The fix was already in before the meeting started.

And why the traditional media continues to let Moss’ “surprise” quotes go unchallenged is beyond me. They know damn well it wasn’t a surprise. I know this is sort of inside baseball but readers need to know when stories are being innaccurately portrayed.

And the idea that the commissioners’ salary was reduced on a whim and surprised council President Moss is a farce…

So… Is Councilman Cal Miller’s resignation a surprise?

AWB posted that Jim Howard is running for Cal Miller’s seat.

Since the Jim Howard announcement came so quickly, I would say it was NOT a surprise.

Howard ran back in the primary, and he lives in the 4th. It makes sense he would seek the post.

Jim Howard writing from home here. No I did not have any inside track with Cal Miller or the local GOP on this one. I talked to someone that was at the meeting because I was curious as to how the salary gig worked out and they mentioned that Cal Miller had resigned. I put two and two together and quickly made a decision to jump on this. No insider information—just quick response (and I am a former Intelligence officer so I would like to say “good Intelligence”). Its about breaking down silos during economically troubled times. Its about making government work with more common sense and less ego. That is what I am about in this candidacy.

Well Jim, I wish you the best of luck.

However, I would appreciate it if you kept the agenda of County Government separate from your “pro-life” agenda. Being on council will give you some influence in county government and you have to remember to serve ALL the people- not just those that have the same view as you.

    Jim,

I think you would be an excellent choice for the Republican party and I wish you well.

As you probably know, I think the county council is a disaster and in need of a complete overhaul. You would be a welcome change - good luck…

    Jeff,

Are you kidding me? You are obviously new to this area because this County Council IS the OVERHAUL. You should have seen the previous group.

    Green Jeans,

A sad commentary to be sure…

Jim, I would heed Kevin’s words. Please check your partisanship at the door and become, like Kevin, a figure that is unbiased, objective, willing to consider other opinions, and transcends party politics.

I hope the sarcasm comes across in text.

County Council is a fiscal body and I suspect that all of my attention will be devoted to spending smartly or not spending at all. While I hold my Pro-Life convictions closely, at the end of the day my job on County Council will be to see this County survive and thrive Economically into the next decade–that equals jobs, jobs equals stable families and stable families protect and nuture life. Thats the only view I can ever have and I would sincerely hope for our Country that this simple view can transcend partisan politics.

How about Tracy Warner outing Jim Howard as a member of the “Kelty” wing of the party. I am fairly certain that the Kelty wing consists of about 8 loons and it does not include Mr. Howard. If I remember correctly, Mr. Howard was frequently critical of Kelty. Unfair and unnecessary slam by Warner.

What it comes down to is that the ultra-lib Warner believes that all pro-life individuals are unfit to serve on county council or any other office. We all know how much county council weighs in on the abortion debate.

    Warner’s column is ridiculous.

Nobody says our local politicans don’t have boundary issues. We have endured and are enduring the era of big government in Fort Wayne. I have no doubt that this group would declare war on Ohio if they thought they could.

  14. Kevin Knuth on January 6th, 2009 3:20 pm

    Green Jeans,

I think that Jim was involved in the Kelty campaign. He was named in the now famous emails that surfaced as the trial began.

You think the Kelty wing consisted of only “8 loons”? Then how did he win the primary???

  15. Keith Cumtwa on January 6th, 2009 3:20 pm

    Knuth

Did you see who he was running against?

  16. mark on January 6th, 2009 4:51 pm

    Kevin,

Jim Howard was not involved in the Kelty campaign.

But I expect this kind of stuff from you and Warner, since you are part of the Blago wing of the Democratic party.

  17. Kevin Knuth on January 6th, 2009 5:29 pm

    Mark,

Yet some of Matt’s biggest supporters (Dan Turkette, Fred Rost) are backing Howard.

Your response is surprising- I don’t care if someone backed Kelty…..hmmm…..seems like that is a sore spot.

As I recall, you were a big Kelty backer too- still think he is innocent?

  18. Mr. Green Jeans on January 6th, 2009 10:24 pm

Mr. Knuth, I should have been more clear, the Kelty “wing” NOW only exist of about 8 loons and a couple of hoots.

  19. Kevin Knuth on January 7th, 2009 7:53 am

    “…and a couple of hoots”….

    Now THAT is funny!
