Casino Whiners

Posted by Jeff Pruitt - 5/3/09 @ 9:10 pm - Filed Under Featured, Local Politics

Am I the only one getting a kick out of the traditional media whining about the Henry administration not being “open” regarding the lobbyist hired to push for a casino referendum? The mayor has stated over and over again that he wants a referendum yet they chide him for not showing leadership? Look, it’s the worst kept secret in the city that Henry would like to see a casino but the mayor is doing the right thing by allowing the people to decide. Here’s an example of the whining from a local paper’s editorial staff:

Legislators repeatedly sent the message that they were not going to stick their necks out for a casino referendum without full support from the city for its success – otherwise, why have a referendum?

I find it comical that they characterize the call for a referendum as “sticking their necks out” - could anything be less controversial than that? And whether or not the city wants it to succeed is really beyond the point; “success” is guaranteed because the people will get the final say. And to answer the editorial’s question, that is the reason to have a referendum. I know this populism thing scares them but I would think they at least understand the basic premise behind a referendum.

The traditional media’s faux outrage is just comical. They are shocked(!) to find that the city has paid for a lobbyist to push for what they’ve been publicly requesting for the past several months.

Given the administration’s willingness to announce the contracts to study gambling, the public cannot help inferring that its silence on the lobbying contracts means the mayor wasn’t eager to inform citizens he was actively seeking a referendum – before he commissioned the studies.

Wasn’t eager to inform citizens he was seeking a referendum? Is there a citizen in the city who didn’t already know this? The poor traditional media feels so slighted that they actually had to do some work instead of waiting for the next administration press release. This is much to do about nothing - inside baseball crap being blown out of proportion by the media.

Mayor Henry wants a referendum, he’s pushing for it at the statehouse and that is the right thing to do. It’s what should have been done leading up to Harrison Square. Of course the same people whining about the mayor’s “lack of openness” probably wouldn’t have liked the outcome of that vote so I can see why entrusting us lowly citizens to make our own decisions would scare them…

Mayor Henry and the good old boys in town are trying to shove this casino down our throats. This is a Christian City of God and we don’t need no casino here ! Disturbed and dirty people frequent the casinos. Alot of druggies and pimps would stand out in front of the casino. Think about all the people who buy lottery tickets or hang out at the bingo parlors. Is that what Mayor Henry wants this community to be ?

If a few people around here want to dance with the devil then let them take a plane to Las Vegas and do it ! I’m not having a casino in a town that prides itself on purity and decency. I want all the God Fearing citizens to stand and fight for the casino. God knows we need it !

  2. Milton H. Swinehart on May 4th, 2009 3:11 pm

Ughhh !!! I got so flaming mad I typed the wrong damn thing.

My last line should be: I want all the God Fearing citizens to stand and fight against the casino. God knows we don’t need it !!

  3. Phil Marx on May 4th, 2009 9:29 pm

Yeah, before you know it they’ll be opening strip bars in Fort Wayne too!

  4. Milton H. Swinehart on May 5th, 2009 11:35 am

What are you talking about? There already is a whole slew of strip clubs in the area. If you want to partake in that kind of acivity then so be it. I’m sure you have been to Cagny’s or Brandy’s, maybe even Showgirl one, two or three. Boom Boom’s use to be real popular with some people but somebody told me not so much now. I don’t go to those type of places cause their nothing but trouble with a capital T !

I was talking about a casino though. That’s what people are trying to shove down our throats ! We don’t need no casino here and won’t never need one ever so don’t try to tell me how to spend my money when it comes to these types of things cause I wouldn’t step foot in a casino if you paid me !! Like I said earlier druggies and pimps hang out in the front of casinos and that aint good if your trying to live the good life.

  5. Mr. Green Jeans on May 5th, 2009 12:20 pm

Maybe Mr. Swinehart has stumbled upon the new slogan for the anti-casino movement….. “We dont need no casino here”

  6. Honest Abe on May 5th, 2009 1:17 pm

    Milton Popp,

I think you’re really in favor of a casino in Fort Wayne and you’re just here to stir up some shit.

I’ve been to Casinos in Gary, Michigan City, a couple in Michigan, several in Atlantic City, and more than I can count in Las Vegas.

Not once have I observed druggies and pimps hanging around the outside of casinos.

Oh, and the Boom Boom Saloon was torn down over a decade ago. Cagny’s is no longer in business either.

  7. Keith Cumtwa on May 5th, 2009 1:48 pm

For staying away from them because they’re trouble with a capital “T”, Milton sure has an encyclopedic knowledge of strip clubs located in Fort Wayne.

  8. Milton H. Swinehart on May 5th, 2009 2:37 pm

For someone calling themself Honest Abe you sure do like to curse a bunch. If you want to fequent the devils hot spots fine ! And substituing poop for my last name wont get you anywhere. It just shows how far you casino apple polishers will go to get your very own sin city here. I don’t know what goes on in these types of places but it aint gonna happen here !

I bought my grandson a Larry Bird sports shirt and I took it away from him after I found out Larry Bird wanted to open up a casino here in Indiana. I use to watch The Apprentice tv show but gave it up because Donald Trump runs casinos too ! Casinos rot your brain and your wallet at the same time. This is true ! All God Fearing people need to head their bibles and stand up for the people who will make millions off of this whole mess !

  9. Milton H. Swinehart on May 5th, 2009 2:39 pm

Holy Mother of God I did it again !

My last sentence should read: All God Fearing people need to read their bibles and stand up against the people who will make millions off of this whole mess !

  10. Jeff H. on May 5th, 2009 4:46 pm

Milton - You are a funny dude. You’ve obviously never been to a casino. Maybe you should consider tutoring. I hear it pays well over $.25/hour.

  11. Phil Marx on May 5th, 2009 7:59 pm

I once won a hundred bucks at the blackjack table, so don’t tell me gambling don’t pay. Of course, it took me several hours and about $500 before I got good at the game, but still - I won! Not Milton and not nobody else is going to ever take that away from me because I AM A WINNER!!!

I spent it all at the strip bar later that night. But don’t worry I wasn’t there to look, just drinking the beer. Do you know they charge you an extra twenty bucks to drink your beer behind a curtain? Five beers and I was out of money.

By the way, the pimps and the druggies aren’t usually allowed to hang out in front of the casinos. They can be located though at the strip bars just down the block.

  12. Jeff Pruitt on May 5th, 2009 11:27 pm

    Milton,

Mayor Henry and the good old boys in town are trying to shove this casino down our throats.

By allowing everyone to vote on it?

  13. Tumbleweed on May 6th, 2009 7:13 am

    Mr Swinehart,

You sir, are a very angry individual. The smoke, coming from your flaming head is apparently clouding your vision to the point you can’t compose a letter coherently. Not once, but twice. I suspect that you have never been to a casino, because all you want to believe is that they are guarded by druggies and pimps. The fact that you now believe that Larry Bird has fallen in with that ilk, and decide that you have to punish your Grandson by taking away his present is further proof that you are waaay out there. Calm down, take a breath and read what you are saying. Obviously, you don’t.

  14. Ranger Bob on May 6th, 2009 2:28 pm

Uncle Miltie, Your post started bad and kept right on getting worse, The Mayor proposed a referendum, that,s where the people get to decide by vote, imagine that, everyone getting a say in there future, shoving down your throat would be the smoking ordinance and Harrison Sq.
I,m no Bible scholar, but the Bible does not directly speak about gambling, I looked it up, so don,t bother with the i,m crazy stuff. Hell half the Catholic Parishes in town keep there doors open with Casino nights. So I would assume you don,t buy gas where they sell lottery tickets, that would be tainted fuel.
Miltie, your worse then there pimps and whores at them there Casino,s, if it ain,t right for Miltie, then by God it ain,t right for nobody.
Using your theory, that would make Michigan City, Anderson and all the rest, Godless cities, God stops working in Casino cities. Yea right!
When 2000 people show to apply for 200 seasonal minimum wage jobs for the Caps, then you have your head in the sand if you don,t think these 1500 jobs will make differance in some folks lives.
Miltie, keep the Casino passage in your prayers

  15. Milton H. Swinehart on May 6th, 2009 2:51 pm

I knew it ! I knew all of you would come at me with everything you got ! Just as Jesus had everyone against him 2000 years ago so is true today in Fort Wayne. No matter what you try to say or do the casino aint coming to town. You can bet on that !

And dont try to tell me about the Bible. I know all about it already. You tell me Mr. Smartysmarts where Jesus gambled in the Bible ? Go ahead and look it up ! But you aint gonna find nothing ! It is true Jesus took fellowship with bad people: hookers and thiefs, but never ever did he talk about druggies and pimps. No way !!

I wish all of you would remember this: Those who live by the sword will have to die by the sword (that’s the Bible for all of you who dont know) If you live to gamble then you will die gambling too !

Take that !! And God Bless.

  16. Honest Abe on May 6th, 2009 3:04 pm

    Milt,

So now you’re comparing yourself to Jesus? I know Jesus and you sir, are no Jesus.

  17. Concerned Citizen on May 6th, 2009 5:49 pm

Don’t the Pimps and the Whores hang out in Washington D.C?

  18. Milton T. S(wineflu) Friedman on May 6th, 2009 5:57 pm

If a Casino is built downtown it will draw business away from the Coliseum Strip clubs. Isn’t that a good thing?

  19. Ranger Bob on May 6th, 2009 5:58 pm

Uncle Miltie, Before you soil yourself over this, you should probably get ahold of Sen. Tom Wyss and have him shrink wrap you inside your house untill this issue is settled. The more I think about it, do you have room for Wyss?

  20. Guido in Vegas on May 6th, 2009 5:58 pm

If the Casino isn’t Italian owned, I swear on my Holy Sainted Grandmother’s grave, I will oppose it.

  21. Robert Enders on May 7th, 2009 12:00 am

Jesus didn’t eat Italian food either. Look it up.

  22. city resident on May 7th, 2009 6:38 am

I never saw where Jesus took the time to respond to blog entries either. Since Milton knows the Bible so well maybe he could cite chapter and verse.

This guy can’t be for real (Milton that is, not Jesus). My bet is that he is just a regular who made up the name to yank our collective chains.

  23. Jon Olinger on May 7th, 2009 6:54 am

“Don’t the Pimps and the Whores hang out in Washington D.C?”

No Concerned Citizen, your confusing Pimps and Whores with Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi…Pimps and Whores at least have some standards…

  24. Jon Olinger on May 7th, 2009 6:54 am

I agree with city…this guy is jerking your chain.

  25. Robert Enders on May 7th, 2009 7:54 am

Come to think of it, Tutor may have been jerking our chain too.

It can be difficult to tell trolls from the people who are genuinely crazy. Trolls quit when they get bored. Crazy people stay the course.

  26. Christopher Wright on May 7th, 2009 12:23 pm

whats the harm in a Casino! Honestly? Republicans oppose it cause Henry “wants” it! Democrats want it because well he’s the “boss”. We do have churches in our city and lots of them but what does that have to do with a Casino. They cast lots in the Bible is that not gambling?

We must understand that the money we get from the federal government is only a temp. fix to problems. We can not rely on government to create jobs for us people create jobs. If it creates jobs and brings much needed revenue into our local economy then whats the problem? Times are tough we need to be creative in ways of creating jobs and bringing much needed revenue into the local economy. Crime doesnt go up dramatically- thats bull so don’t give me that arguement please don’t!

It seems to me we all have principles and platforms but when it comes to common sense we throw those out the window to vote party lines. Casino taxes go into education. Is education a party lined issue? Or healthcare or social programs? They seem to me to be basic human rights… I am no liberal don’t get me wrong but sometime in our fair city we take a lapse from common sense to bicker on the side of political party…

Why doesnt local government just give the opprotunity to the people in this refer. because I think our politicians forget they serve at the will of the people. Caesar was under GOD, not GOD under Caesar likewise of a great Democracy politicians are under the people, not the people under politicians…

*and Honest Abe I agree with you my friend, in fact I have NEVER seen a so-called Druggie or Pimp at a Casino… haha

  27. Tumbleweed on May 7th, 2009 1:35 pm

Search for the Milton H. Swinehart name. It does not exist. The guy has to be a troll.

  28. Honest Abe on May 7th, 2009 1:48 pm

It may be a play on Swihart. There are several here in town. I don’t take Uncle Milt or Tutor seriously. They’re just here to stir the old’ sh*t bucket.

  29. Evert Mol on May 8th, 2009 1:25 pm

When we lived in New Jersey (and if any of you have complaints about Indiana, New Jersey is easily the most chickenshit state in the Union) you could tell when the social security checks were deposited because there were hundreds of buses headed to Atlantic City. If someone thinks jerking the lever on a slot machine all day is fun, that’s great. If someone thinks they can actually win money at a casino, that’s even better. These are the same kind of people who think there’s actually a free lunch. The more of that lunch they’re paying for instead of somebody else, the better.

  30. perfect storm on May 26th, 2009 5:22 pm

    The casino is coming.

    This cannot be stopped.

Also a waterpark, IMAX theatre, ETC……

    Accept reality.

Embrace change, and finally a reason to visit this city.

If you are not a fan I believe there is a spot in the Maldives Islands that is not progressing.

  31. Indy Lurker on May 28th, 2009 3:46 pm

And the news being reported today in Indy from the leader of the Indiana Senate is that casino issues from Ft Wayne and Indianapolis are reponsible for the derailing of the budget bill. The Hoosier Park Casino is requesting a bail-out lottery sales are down…time to cut spending.

  32. Anonymous on May 31st, 2009 7:25 am

    You are right (INDY LURKER)..

    That is why.
Casino IS coming, they are just warming the city up for the inevitable.
Too much invested already, It will be like the new ballpark everyone opposed. Then out of nowhere, “sorry we’ve come too far; vote is irrelavent its here”. I know its just a matter of time. I am excited actually, it will help alot of issues out we are having as a city, and surrounding areas, the location will be key to its success, along with the waterpark,Imax theatre, resort…etc

It is all in the works!!!!

  33. Robert Enders on June 1st, 2009 7:53 am

Barney Frank introduced a bill to legalize and tax online gambling. If this passes, it will reduce the appeal and profitability of brick and mortar casinos.

If I were an investor, I’d wait to see where this bill goes before investing in a casino. If I were the mayor, I wouldn’t spend any money on this.
