New York’s 23rd Congressional District special election

This special election has drawn intense national interest…
The race is between Bill Owens - a somewhat moderate Democrat, Dierdre Scozzafava an extremely liberal Republican, and Bill Hoffman running on the Conservative ticket.
First you have to realize that New York has multiple political parties, the Conservative Party in New York is relatively strong for a third party.
Next you have to realize that the Republican nominee was chosen by a few Republicans who appointed her to run. She is extremely liberal; in fact, she is widely considered to be more liberal that Bill Owens who is the Democrat in the race…
The National Republican Party and many Republicans supported Scozzafava in the race; however, Sarah Palin and several other conservatives have backed the Conservative Party candidate over the Republican. Note this is exactly what conservatives need to do.
I am sick and tired of seeing Republicans support big Government and Liberal Republicans like Arlen Specter from Pennsylvania (Who finally became a Democrat this year).
Today Scoffafava dropped out of the race. She will still be on the ballot; however, she is telling her supporters they can vote for one of the other two candidates. Interestingly enough, she did NOT endorse either candidate.
I hope that Conservative Party Candidate Hoffman wins this coming Tuesday and that he wins big. That would send a message to “country club Republicans,” big government Republicans,” and “liberal Republicans” that they need to clean their act up or be challenged in the primary or even General Election by conservative candidates.
Go Hoffman!

That “Strong” conservative party you speak of nominated John McCain in 2008 for President.
Further, they have a history of running candidates who believe in their party principles, but have no chance of winning elections.
Mike
All three people who are running were chosen by their party to run.
Mr.Hoffman was one of four people who wanted to be the Conservative Party of New York’s nominee.
I was surprised to find out that Mr. Hoffman doesn’t even live in the 23rd district. He and his family live in Lake Placid which is in the 20th District.
John,
The process by which the Republican was chosen was ridiculous. It was legal; however, a few local officials got together and appointed her…
I had not heard about him not living in the 23rd District. I would like to know more about that…
Mike
Steve Buyer? Who’s that?
You do NOT have to live in the district you represent in Congress. Now, if I could only convince the good people of Hawaii to elect me……
Kevin is right.
Article one of the Constitution lays out the qualifications for House and Senate candidates.
House candidates only have to live in the state, not the district.
Darn, so much for Hawaii!
Chris Chocola represented Indiana’s 2nd District even though he was living in the 3rd during his last term.
Kevin and John,
I tend to think I would not vote for a candidate who does not live in my District; however, I am glad you both pointed out the rules.
This is something Kevin and I have discussed on this blog before…
Mike
There was no primary election. Had there been, Scuzzy’s left leaning extremist views would have been exposed and Hoffman would have emerged as the Republican candidate in one of the few conservative districts in NY. Before Kevin gets excited, I know that NY23 went to Obama in November, but then, so did Indiana. Then is then and now is now.
As for Bill Owens being more moderate than Scozzafava . . . probably not. In a debate he preached the Obama hope ‘n change, healthcare-for-all-but-it-will-cost-you-dearly, etc, etc.
As for Hoffman, he was born and raised in Saranac Lake, in the 23rd district. He now lives in nearby Lake Placid, which was also in the 23rd district until it was gerrymandered out in 2001.
GOP just took the VA governor’s race, and NJ is not far behind. How’s that hope-n-change working for ya now?
Gadfly- and your excuse today is?
Mike
I wouldn’t vote for a candidate outside of my district either.
Kevin mentioned Mr. Chocola. I found it interesting that Mr. Chocola’s current job is president of the Club for Growth. This organization gave over one million dollars to support Mr. Hoffman’s ill-fated campaign.
John,
I am not a Chocola fan by any stretch of the imagination…
The only Indiana Congressman I think deserves re-election is Mike Pence. The other eight are not impressive…
