The Federal, State, and local Governments should all eliminate all housing programs

The real estate market in the United States is huge.  There are currently a large number of properties available for sale and available for rent.

There is no reason for the Government to be involved in subsidizing housing at all.

Consider a recent article in the News-Sentinel “ A good idea or a waste of money?”

This article specifically discusses a 214 unit apartment complex in Fort Wayne called the Cottages at McMillen Park.  In the 1990’s the taxpayers spent 3 million dollars to improve these units of Governmental housing.  Per the article only 1/4 of the units are occupied; almost all of those be people are subsidized by the Fort Wayne Housing Authority.

The Federal Government and other lenders are going to foreclose on the property and sell it at a Sheriff’s sale December 9th, 2009.  Then per the article the entire complex will be raised and rebuilt with the help of more Federal tax dollars.

This entire process is predictable and a complete waste of taxpayer dollars.

According to the article “many would-be Housing Authority clients have declined vouchers requiring at least one year’s residence there.”

Amazing.

This country is doomed unless we shrink the size of Government at all levels and stop the entitlement mentality that seems to be growing US citizens.

I agree Mike. The nerve of the handicapped and elderly, wanting a place to live. What’s their problem anyway?

    Craig,
Mike was pointing out that there is a huge housing surplus in Fort Wayne. The handicapped and elderly have places to stay.

Actually, his headline reads “Federal, State, and Local Governments should eliminate all housing programs.”

Silly me for interpreting Mike’s words to mean what they say.

    Craig,

    Of course I mean what I say…

Each and every one of these housing programs should be abolished.

They are a complete waste of taxpayer dollars.

I agree with Mike. I see what seems to be single Mom’s trudging from Chestnut Hills apartments, (section 8) with 4-5 kids walking down the road to the local store all the time.

If they’re unemployed, they can pay as little as $70 per month for a $800-900 a month apartment, not to mention the other relief programs they’re most likely receiving. The father(s), which could be anywhere from 1-5 of them, are nowhere to be seen.

These programs are shifting these people out of the city and into the country. In this case, it’s in the middle of a corn field. No bus service, no shopping, you can’t walk to any services. Nothing. Not even any J.O.B.S.

It’s a tragedy. We should be spending this money on teaching these people how to be self-sufficient. Instead, we’re perpetuating the “living off the government tit” syndrome.
