Prediction two made on this blog on 11/8/2008

Posted by Mike Sylvester - 1/17/10 @ 12:18 pm - Filed Under National Politics

My second prediction made on 11/8/08 is listed below in italics:

Many conservatives, especially in talk radio, are warning that the Democrats will bring back the “Fairness Doctrine.”  I think that some Democrats will try to bring this terrible law back into effect; however, I feel they will be soundly defeated (as they should be).

My second prediction was also dead on.  Conservatives in talk radio keep trying to convince their supporters that the “Fairness Doctrine” will be re-implemented; however, I do not think it will be.

A few Democrats have talked about bringing back the “Fairness Doctrine”; however, they are a minority.  The Democrats have made no effort to re-implement this unconstitutional policy.

So far I am 2 for 2 on the predictions I made over a year ago.

Mike

With Air America going belly up the fairness doctrine may reappear. Since that is probably the only way “left” radio could possibly survive by being propped up by the government.

  2. Kevin Knuth on January 25th, 2010 9:02 am

Tim, how is “RIGHT WING” radio going? WOWO is down to a skeleton crew because they are NOT MAKING MONEY.

  3. timraiders on January 25th, 2010 9:52 am

Right wing radio is selling just fine Kevin.

Skeleton crew? You do know Bob Sievers passed away and Bob Chase retired right? Then they got new people to replace them?

  4. Kevin Knuth on January 25th, 2010 10:26 am

And YOU know that the Queen, Enoch Perry and a couple of other news folks were let go for budgetary reasons, right?

Dan Mandis was brought in as Operations Manager and now also has to fill in as morning producer and newsguy.

And you know “Red”, Pat White’s producer, is the receptionist?

Sounds like they are rolling in the money to me!

  5. Mark A. on January 25th, 2010 1:56 pm

Queen was let go because of her mouth, it had nothing to do with money.

  6. timraiders on January 25th, 2010 2:22 pm

One of the things that Federated Media does Kevin is make sure people can do multiple jobs. It helps them stay employed. They aren’t doing anything different than any other company in this country. I think they call that cross training. Good for Red. Good to see she’s learning more parts of the business to keep herself employed. Thats’ what some people do kevin. They learn more at there job instead of people who have there hand out asking for something free from the government.

  7. Kevin Knuth on January 25th, 2010 2:25 pm

    Mark,

Interesting. My understanding is that they wanted her to do 2 jobs for the price of one.

Oh, and since 2003 WOWO has 7 fewer On-Air staff and support staff members.

    Business must be booming!

  8. timraiders on January 25th, 2010 2:37 pm

Queen left to work for the Leukemia society here in FW. She couldn’t get along with anyone there and wanted to go back to wowo. they didn’t want her.

enoch perry got in an argument with charly butcher and walked out leaving about 5 minutes of dead air space.

Kevin, why compare the closing of air america with wowo radio in FW? Is that the only argument you have? Maybe you could explain why Fox News with Orielly, hannity, etc. is beating everyone else by at least triple? Better get your boys to fire up that “fairness docturine”.

  9. Kevin Knuth on January 25th, 2010 3:42 pm

    Tim,

Faux news is a great news source for right wingers who want to hear what they WANT to hear- as long is it is not the truth.

Funny- Enoch worked part time for WOWO until a few weeks ago when he moved to Arizona…..

Seems you have your facts mixed up!

  10. Kevin Knuth on January 25th, 2010 4:50 pm

    Tim,

Looking over ratings…so you admit that NBC, CBS and ABC are NOT left wing, correct? Cause they bury fox news!

    Kevin,

    Mark,

Network news gets 23 Million viewers a day.

“So while Fox loves to say they are the “highest rated CABLE news network” their nightly viewership is still only 1/6 of the total viewing audience……Like saying “no body does it better”…right, but a lot do it just as well.”

    So what are you smoking?

  13. Kevin Knuth on January 25th, 2010 7:43 pm

And Mark, I notice that you FAILED to list NBC, CBS and ABC….

    Kevin,

My information came from someone who is “ON THE AIR” at that station. A little better info than your “I heard”.

They “bury” fox news? Your doing fuzzy math again, kev!!!!

  16. Kevin Knuth on January 25th, 2010 9:16 pm

    But are they making money?

This is an interesting read: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bill-mann/limbaughs-dirty-little-se_b_185965.html

  17. Kevin Knuth on January 25th, 2010 9:17 pm

Tim, “I HEARD” from someone who was on the air…I stand by my statement.

  18. tim zank on January 25th, 2010 9:56 pm

heh heh heh…in the huffington post clip Kevin provided, the 2nd commenter makes a very astute observation…Air America couldn’t make a “barter deal”? It’s so bad they couldn’t give it away? hahahahahahahah…that ’splains that…

  19. Mark A. on January 25th, 2010 10:37 pm

Kevin is kinda like that loser, the former SNL guy from up Nort., not funny, full of Walleye dung and a liar.

  20. Kevin Knuth on January 26th, 2010 7:47 am

Sticks and stones boys- if you can’t win the argument, you resort to name calling. Nice! thanks for admitting I win!

  21. Kevin Knuth on January 26th, 2010 7:53 am

Clarification- Tim- where is the “Fuzzy” math?

NETWORK NEWS has 23 MILLION viewers a day (you know- networks, like ABC, CBS, NBC). Why is Fox news TRAILING them all?

  22. timraiders on January 26th, 2010 10:10 am

    Kevin,

That is news? They’ve done trade outs in radio for years. Furniture, products, etc.

Fox news is on cable. It doesn’t have the exposure that the networks have. I never said it could or did beat the networks. You have to have cable to get it.

  23. Kevin Knuth on January 26th, 2010 11:34 am

    Tim,

Then FOX NEWS is the LEADER (as long as you don’t consider the REAL news leaders).

I get it- it is like saying the New York Jets are the best team in the AFC (except for the Colts).

I have nothing against tradeouts- but it goes back to my original point- Just because you have ratings does NOT mean you are profitable.

  24. tim zank on January 26th, 2010 12:08 pm

Kevin sez “Just because you have ratings does NOT mean you are profitable.”

That is probably the most illogical statement you’ve made in some time. While every business has annual revenue “ebb & flow”, the entire advertising industry pricing structure is predicated upon ratings. The higher the ratings, the more the spot costs.

Why do you always go so far off the reservation? It’s just weird the lengths you go to just to disparage any “perceived” opponent, in this case Limbaugh. Reality is reality man, conservative talk radio is extremely popular and profitable, while liberal radio is obviously NOT popular and profitable. Not exactly rocket science.

  25. Kevin Knuth on January 26th, 2010 12:23 pm

    Tim,

Ever see a really busy restaurant go out of business? BUSY does not mean PROFITABLE.

Same thing goes here- RATINGS do not mean you are making money. WOWO gives up advertising time to NATIONAL ads that pay RUSH- NOT WOWO for promotion. That is less in their coffers.

Clearly you did not read the articles I pointed to earlier.

Oh, and I like the list of ratings you put up. Did you see WBYR is 3rd? According to Mediawatch they just let go of Jack Hammer and reduced Billy Elvis to Part time. BUDGET CUTS. 3rd rated station has to cut its budget….hmmmm…..must not be profitable!

  26. timraiders on January 26th, 2010 12:45 pm

Kevin might want to check your so called “source”. Enoch is in new mexico NOT arizona as you claim.

WOWO is also the number one billing station for federated media, just in case you were curious. Yeah i’m going to believe the huffington post. I’m sure there coverage isn’t slanted.

Kevin, ever cross your mind that someone is let go because maybe they aren’t doing there job well, Instead of “budget cuts”. People do get let go because they ratings dip and ad revenue goes down. I’m sure they are just waiting for that trickle down from the stimulus to over inflate there roster of air talent.

  27. Kevin Knuth on January 26th, 2010 2:45 pm

    Tim,

So is the NUMBER ONE BILLING station making money? Billing is not the same as profit.

Why are you all SOOOOOO defensive here? I raised a simple point- ratings do NOT mean you are making money. Glenn Beck has high ratings but lost most of his big advertisers after he called Obama a racist.

If you really think RATINGS automatically means you are making money, you are clueless.

Here is another example- Journal Gazette. Most read newspaper in the region. So the most market share- they must be making a killing! Are they?? Or, are they falling on hard times like every other newspaper in the country?

Oh, you are correct about Enoch, he is in New Mexico. I was thinking it was Arizona, but I re-read the note he sent me.

  28. timraiders on January 27th, 2010 10:19 am

No Kevin billing does not mean profit. Revenue and profit are two much different things. You started comparing the closing of Air America to Wowo. I don’t get the comparison.

I guess you should have ask this morning when you were on the air. I’m sure they would have told you if they were going to shut down.

  29. CB on March 23rd, 2010 3:40 pm

Average Quarter Hour is the average number of people listening during a 15 min period. It’s really an estimate but it’s accurate enough for radio work. Too much is made of the moves in market rank for each individual ratings “book”. You really need to look at trends and multibook averages. And yes WOWO is making money. Enough money to help the entire chain of stations through a difficult time, as they helped us through some rough patches. It’s probably the best run independent family owned broadcast company in the US, not my words but other broadcast professionals. You can’t really surmise our cash flow based on the number of employees we have as we have become more efficient at our business…now i have to get back to cleaning the break room.

  30. burt on March 25th, 2010 5:40 am

WXXC blast out every FM station around central Indiana, but I see they are not doing that well.

WOWO I use to listen to as a child in Pennsylvania. With 50,000 watts their signal travels well, even to Europe! No economic problems with WOWO. As for the Right Wingers, Rush Limbaugh sells well because he makes money for a station. Compile a list of Billionaires and you’ll find they are mostly Communist like Ted Turner, but that never got in the way of them making money.
