A Quick Thought on Evan Bayh

I’ve been anti-Bayh for a long, long time now for a variety of reasons. Some of the biggest reasons were his vote for the Iraq war (he was also a major champion drumming up support wherever he went), his support of the flag-burning amendment and his vote for the industry-written bankruptcy bill.
Having said that, it’s kind of refreshing to see somebody retire who isn’t drawing Social Security or under federal indictment…

Maybe he’s haunted by the vision of a semicomatose Robert Byrd being wheeled into the Senate chamber. All our elected officials would regain some respect if they gave up their office after a reasonable time of service out of good conscience instead of death or a looming defeat. But not knowing all Bayh’s motives, it’s hard to know how much respect he deserves.

He saw the handwriting on the wall. Even had he won re-election he would have been bloodied badly and his wife would have been a huge target….Hell he’s only 54, walk away and live to fight another day.
