3rd District Caucus

I have had numerous people ask me who I will vote for in the upcoming Republican 3rd District Caucus.  The truth of the matter is; I am not sure yet.

I think there may be more people who decide to run and it is hard to decide who to vote for when you do not know who all of your choices are going to be.

In an earlier post I predicted that I would get 50 pieces of direct mail and additional phone calls.

To date I have received:

  1. A letter from Marlin Stutzman
  2. A letter from Randy Borror
  3. Another piece from Marlin Stutzman.  This was in invitation to a cookout and then a Tin Caps Game.  I plan on attending the cookout.
  4. A letter from Matt Bell, supporting Randy Borror.
  5. An email from Kurt and Carrie Gutman inviting me to an event with Randy Borror.  I plan on attending this as well.

I also got a phone call from Marlin Stutzman over Memorial Day weekend and a second call from one of his supporters.  They had my work number and so left messages since the office was closed.

Since the candidates only have a little over 500 people to market to I am certain that all of the Precinct Committee persons will get a huge amount of direct mail, email, and phone calls.

I truly believe that this is a race that only two people have a chance of winning.  I truly think that the final two contestants in the Caucus will be Randy Borror and Marlin Stutzman.  I do not think there is realistically any chance of anyone other than those two winning this Caucus.  That being said, caucuses like this are strange events and we will know who wins on June 12th!

Do you prefer some of the newcomers in the race to your choice in the primary?

    I am not sure yet…

There are a lot of candidates to look at.

Stutzman and Borror have savvy political supporters and staff at their disposal. I suppose that Wes Culver has some of the same resources as well, since he is also a long-term politician and and a member of the Indiana House.

Nobody else, with the possible exception of Big Bucks Bob, has any significant resources to run in this selection process. Five hundred precinct committeemen are just enough to make this more than a simple contest driven by one-on-one interviews.

I received Stutzman’s email asking for a campaign contribution already, so I figure that he is out of the gate well ahead of the rest of the horses.

The staff you speak of for Stutzman are 99% volunteer.

I dont believe there is any way that Stutzman is even close to the most qualified candidate for this job and I actually think he would be defeated soundly in a debate if he had to debate Thomas, Brown, or others on the issues. He would be foolish to stand toe to toe on the issues with the other candidates. He can get by the next 10 days on sound bites…. “less government, lower taxes, right to life, keep your guns etc etc.”

We all know that this is not a debate contest and the most qualified or most intelligent candidates will likely not prevail. Stutzman has the momentum and the perception that he is an unstoppable political force in this caucus. People want to support a winner and he is the perceived dominate frontrunner right now.

As a result, I think Stutzman will win this thing rather easily as he dominates the non Allen County areas and the other 89 candidates divvy up Allen County and the rest of the support.

“less government, lower taxes, right to life, keep your guns etc etc.”

Have you checked his record? He says them because he has authored and co-authored legislation in these areas. The other two have not.

Of course “Me” the other two people are not state legislators so it would be rather difficult for them to author such legislation.

Like I said, he will get by on soundbites and he will win. You should be happy not aggrivated.

Very happy, but he can hold his own…
