City Administration at it again

Kevin Leininger has a disturbing article in today’s NS.
The piece discusses the fact the the Henry Administration is spending $72,000 so that some high priced marketing consultants headquartered in Chicago can teach City employees how to use social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook.
The current Democratic Administration and the prior Democratic Administration have had a tendency to hire out of state consultants and pay them an enormous amount of money to do things that could be done locally at a significantly cheaper price.
$72,000 to a Chicago firm to teach City of Fort Wayne employees how to use Facebook and Twitter… You have got to be kidding me.

Well I can certainly understand why Ms. Malloy isn’t in chicago anymore.
What scares me about Tom Smith’s question which was an ok question to ask. He ask if a local company could do this? My question would have been WHAT THE $&%* ARE WE DOING SPENDING $72K ON THIS!!!!!!!!!!!! 75% of americans have computers. Less than that have facebook/twitter accounts. Typical governement spend cut staff payroll but spend that money somehow.
Apparently Ms. Malloy didn’t understand the election results of tuesday much better than the president. Let me guess Mayor Henry thinks this is a good idea? YIKES
$72,000 - they’d better be providing a heck of a lot for that -Myself and a couple of college buddies would be happy to do this for a couple thousand bucks over Christmast Break.
Perhaps I’m naive, but…Why would you need to pay anyone to “teach” anyone how to use facebook or twitter? Not exactly rocket science ya know? Besides that, my guess is, the employees that would receive the “training” probably already have their own personal facebook, linkedin, myspace, twitter and blog accounts and are very familiar with how to set up a page and an account.
Priorities huh? Remember, your elected officials tell you time and again there is no place cut government spending.
Really?
Democrats are in power, mainly, to spend taxpayers money ANY way that they can - and it is generally to “pay-back” for some like spending the other direction!! Liz Brown, are you paying attention - $75,000 is STILL too high!!! How about $100.00 ????????? Sounds very good to me!
As others have pointed out, it is a total waste of tax payer money. What do they plan to do with this new communication device? We have cell phones that allow you to reach out a touch nearly anyone. What does twitter do besides twitter away time. I guess it is an alternative to work.
It will be interesting to see if new city job openings are seeking those with twitter and face book working knowledge.
Is the mayor smoking some funny weed? It is time to come down to reality mayor.
To recite what has already been said above is pointless…this is wrong on so many levels to the point that it almost seems deliberate…is it possible that ANYONE could have looked at this deal and not gathered the sense that it might be out of line to the point of being offensive?
When is this City going to figure out that hiring cops and firefighters, maintaining roads and pumping clean water to my house are admirable and sufficient goals for a municipality? Oh, and consider that if you could recoup our investment from “economic development” projects such as The Coliseum, The Grand Wayne (two or three times), several different hotels, the entire Southtown mall debacle, multiple ballparks & every other tax abatement granted with a rubber stamp over the past twenty or thirty years, we might begin to understand why the tax burden on private enterprise is such that the first thing off of anyone’s tongue when it comes to development is TAX ABATEMENT!
We have eroded our tax base to a degree that common slobs who have been paying into the system forever are working harder and harder just to make a payment to the assessor’s office. Take it all back, and figure how cheap it might be (from a tax perspective) to operate a business if we weren’t funneling such a volume of money into TIF districts to service debt incurred to make all of our lives better. Just have to remind myself that I’m stupid…don’t know what’s good for me, and accept that once Fort Wayne is fully Twittered-up, things are really gonna fall into line.
Although I’m on the other side of the political fence from most people here, I have to say in all my considerable years I have never seen a consultant who was worth a plugged nickel.
I’m always reminded of the old Chris Farley motivational speaker bit on Saturday Night Live: “I’m living in a trailer down by the river…”
Why does anybody of any political persuasion take these guys seriously?
